Night is a photographic archive of night-time wanderings recorded over a year, mainly in and around London, but also in the Netherlands and Belgium.

Sarah Kent writes in London After Dark (2009), an essay accompanying the photographs: ‘Some people seek release from the challenges of the day in drink, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll, but for others, the hours of darkness are a time of introspection and reverie. Bakker avoids the pleasure seekers and, in search for peace, has produced an elegiac meditation on life in the city.

‘…desire is what interests him rather than fulfillment which, as he suggests, is always deferred. Desire after all, is the motivating factor behind projects like this; Bakker’s quest for meaning, therefore is a form of self-reflection, an attempt to understand his own practice and the degree of obsession required to drive one on to completion, so that fulfillment can finally be achieved.’
