Books

INFO>

All that’s left of the empty cleared shelves in a recently closed down north London bookshop are sello-taped labels indicating the relevant sections that used to be there.

Using natural light and shade, selected sections were photographed straight on through a rectangular box previously utilised for display purposes, to create a consistent graphic structure.

Books is part a larger body of work exploring the future of the printed and written word, books as objects and bookshops.

A triptych from this series, 'Art', showing the empty shelves of 'Art History', 'Artists A-Z' and 'General Art', was shown as part of Rethink: Idea, Output, Exchange, a group show responding to art in the time of austerity.

This one day exhibition took place on 4 April 2011, the first day of the new tax year (2011/12) at PS2, 1 Rivington Place, London EC2.

Artists Tim Etchells, Xavier Le Roy and Marten Spangberg, Mirza & Butler, Roelof Bakker and Michael Atavar showed new and existing work for one day only. The works encompassed the genres of performance, photography, dance, visual art and artists' film.

Rethink: Idea, Output, Exchange was curated by Michael Atavar and Portland Green.
